The Netflix mini-series Adolescence has ignited global conversations about the challenges young people face in the digital age. The story of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy arrested for the murder of his female classmate, delves into themes of misogyny, masculinity, online radicalization, and the profound impact of digital content on young people.

Adolescence portrays how easily young minds can be influenced by the online world. However, at inyourskin and Evolve Education, we want to offer you a reminder that students are not passive recipients of media messages. Their responses are shaped by a complex web of factors, including personal experiences, societal norms, and existing beliefs.
While the series highlights the role of social media algorithms in exposing teens to harmful content which can lead to a distorted understanding of relationships, consent, and self-worth, it is important not to attribute harmful behaviours solely to external influencers as this absolves institutions and individuals from addressing misogyny and extremism.
It’s essential to examine and reform our own practices and environments. To that end, we encourage educators to recognize the importance of comprehensive education that goes beyond traditional curricula. Incorporating discussions about digital wellbeing, media literacy, and respectful relationships into the classroom can equip young people with the tools to critically assess online content and resist harmful narratives.
For teenage boys in particular, it is crucial that we do not make assumptions about how easily swayed they are by social media influencers as this can undermine their capacity for critical thinking. Rather, we should focus on creating safe spaces which allow for conversations about sexuality, consent, and online experiences in a way that facilitates both an understanding of the motivations for engaging in misogynistic behaviour and fosters students’ ability to question and challenge harmful norms.

At inyourskin and Evolve Education, we’re committed to supporting schools navigate these complex issues. Through engaging, evidence-based workshops on digital wellbeing and respectful relationships, we equip young people with the tools to think critically, choose wisely, and connect safely.
If you’re an educator ready to spark real change, now’s the time to bring these essential conversations into your school community.
